On occasion of the 10th anniversary of the inauguration of the Memorial to the Homosexuals Persecuted Under the National Socialist Regime on June 3 2018, Frank-Walter Steinmeier became the first federal president to speak at this memorial site.
The memorial – built according to a resolution by the German Bundestag –since May 27 2008 honours the homosexual victims of National Socialism and sets »an enduring example against intolerance, hostility and discrimination against gays and lesbians«.
Besides the Federal President, the speakers at the event were the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, Günter Dworek, one of the initiators of the memorial and representative of the Lesbian and Gay Federation of Germany (LSVD) as well as Gulya Sultanova of the LGBT film festival »Side by Side« in St. Petersburg.
At the same time, a new film by the Israeli media artist Yael Bartana is being shown in the memorial following the ceremony.
The Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is responsible for maintaining the memorial for the homosexual victims. According to a resolution of the German Bundestag, the Foundation is institutionally funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
