Uwe Neumärker, director of the Foundation for the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe: »We lost a member who was exceptionally committed, as well as a friend. Max Bächer was one of the first members to be appointed to the advisory board of the Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. His goal was to ‘preserve the quality of Peter Eisenman’s design’ while at the same time being sure to ‘find a place of meaning for the other groups of victims.’«
Max Bächer was born in Stuttgart in 1925. From 1946 onwards, he studied architecture at the Hochschule für Technik in Stuttgart (University of Applied Science) (with history of art and literature as minors). After various stays abroad, he started his own office of architecture in Stuttgart. In 1964, he was offered the chair of designing and interior design at the Technische Universität Darmstadt. From 1981 onwards, he taught as permanent visiting professor at the Tongji University, Shanghai. He was emeritus in 1994. Wolfgang Thierse, President of the Deutsche Bundestag (Germany’s national parliament) at the time, appointed Max Bächer to the advisory board of the Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in May 2000.
Max Bächer died on Monday, December 12, at the age of 86 in Darmstadt. His funeral will be held in Stuttgart.
