Two weeks after the opening of the Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe on 10 May and the handing-over to the public on 12 May, the Foundation Memorial continues to report large numbers of visitors, particularly at the weekends. Tens of thousands have explored the field of stelae which can be entered from all sides any time of day or night. Between 35,000 and 38,000 people have visited the underground Information Centre, whose maximum capacity is between 2,500 and 2,700 people a day. The contents of the visitors’ book reflect the public’s predominantly favourable impression. Visitors from Berlin, Germany and many other European countries but also from Israel, the USA, Latin America, Asia and Africa are impressed and moved by the Memorial. They underline the importance of keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive and commemorating the victims.
