Today, 15 years ago, on 12 May 2005, the first visitors came to the place of information. Since that day, the rush of visitors has been unbroken. The foundation welcomes almost 500,000 visitors to the exhibition every year, a total of almost seven million guests have been in the place of information since its opening, many times more in the Stelenfeld.
As a contribution to the memory of this day 15 years ago and especially in memory of Sabina van der Linden-Wolanski*, the animated film »I belive in Love» was created, which offers a new access to biographies of Holocaust survivors.
Sabina van der Linden-Wolanski spoke the unforgettable words as guest of honour on May 10, 2005: “I am the voice of the six million Jews who were abused and murdered […] and I am also the voice of the few who have come away, the voice of the survivors.”
The stiftung Denkmal produced the animated film “I believe in love” together with RomaTrail e. V. The voice in the film is by Dagmar Manzel, actress. She reads from the memories of Sabina van der Linden-Wolanski. Dagmar Manzel on her encounter with Sabina in 2010: “I was very lucky to meet Sabina van der Linden-Wolanski and her family for the reading of her book »Drang nach Leben» 2010 at the Australian Embassy in Berlin. I was deeply touched by her story. “I believe in love” is her message after all that she had to experience as a young girl. Her courage and her warm and open way of meeting people has shaped me, so that the memory of this wonderful and strong woman will accompany me throughout my life.”
Hamze Bytyci, RomaTrail e. V., director of the animated film: “I believe in love” is the third film from a series of animated short films about special Jewish, Sinti or Roma personalities who survived the Nazi genocide. »I am very honoured to be able to direct – not only as an artist and Rome, but above all as a human being. I want to show in the films how incredibly strong the survivors are and that we need to listen very carefully to their voices, especially in today’s times of growing right-wing radicalism and increasing hostility to human beings. They all give me the hope that humanity and love have the strength to overcome racism, anti-Semitism and anti-Gypsyism.”

Background
*Sabina van der Linden-Wolanski was the only one of her family to survive the Holocaust in eastern Poland. After the end of the war, she emigrated to Australia in 1950 via silesia and Paris, now in Poland. The fate of her family is part of the exhibition in the place of information of the Holocaust memorial. In 2010, memories of Holocaust survivors Sabina van der Linden-Wolanski published by the foundation under the title »Drang nach Leben” were published as audiobooks, read by Dagmar Manzel, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Monument to the Murdered Jews of Europe in May 2015.

The exhibition under the Holocaust memorial is closed until further notice. Guided tours do not take place. We very much regret this. We strive to reopen our exhibition to visitors in line with current developments and specifications. The Stelenfeld, the gay monument, the Sinti-and-Roma monument and the memorial site for “euthanasia” victims can be visited. During the day, guests of the places of remembrance can contact a visitor advisor directly with questions about the places. The office of the Memorial Foundation is still available for questions about all the monuments it looks after.
Visitor numbers: In 2019, 480,000 guests came to the place of information under the monument to the murdered Jews of Europe – more than in the previous record year 2015 (475,000).
