At its meeting on 11 May 2000, the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe unanimously approved the commissioning of architect Peter Eisenman with a study of plans for an underground location for the Information Centre. The study is to provide the concept with a concrete form and assist its realisation in relation to planning and building regulations.
The architect’s previous conceptional proposals have expressly taken into account the view of the Board of Trustees that the design of the Information Centre requires a solution which complements the Memorial, preserves its aesthetic and does justice to all functional requirements.
This decision by the Board of Trustees represents a further step in the process of realising the Resolution by the German Bundestag of 25 June 1999, according to which the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is to be supplemented by an Information Centre.
Peter Eisenman’s artistic sketches have made it possible to concretely comprehend the structural and functional integration of the Information Centre into the Memorial. At its next meeting at the beginning of July, the Board of Trustees will hold final discussions on the basis of Mr. Eisenman’s new study.
