From now on, the Portal on the Sites of Memory of the Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is available online. Until now, its information on 400 European sites of memory could only be accessed at the Information Centre of the Holocaust memorial. Now you can reach also the Portal through the website of the Foundation, www.stiftung-denkmal.de, or through its own web presence at www.memorialmuseums.org. There you can pick respective memorial sites on an interactive map of Europe on the homepage.
After an update of the existing (data) records from the exhibition, the incorporation of further sites of memory, and the expansion of service information on each site, the Portal now offers detailed information on sites of memory in more than 34 European countries. These pages include historical sites, memorials, museums and research institutes. Users can gather extensive information on each memorial site by means of historic pictures and maps, and especially through up-to-date graphic material.
As a new feature in the exhibition, the online portal offers extensive background information on the various countries, their history during World War II, and historical commemorative practices that developed after 1945. The Portal on the Sites of Memory is therefore regarded as a unique feature in Europe, since it does not just mark the places, but also offers information on the historical context and the varying forms of memory and commemoration in the respective European countries.
The Portal will be maintained and expanded on an ongoing basis.
