To coincide with the 70th anniversary of the start of World War II and the 20th anniversary of the political transformation in Central and Eastern Europe, the Foundations »Remembrance, Responsibility and Future« (EVZ) and Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe arranged the international conference »Unleashed Memory. Debates on Genocide, Forced Labour and World War II After 1989«. The conference took place on the 3rd and 4th of September 2009 at the Representation of the Federal State of Rheinland-Pfalz in Berlin.
Ten international speakers addressed topics, among them the historians Christopher R. Browning, Jan T. Gross and the Hungarian author and Holocaust survivor György Konrád. The speakers presented their latest research and provided a clear overview of the sometimes controversial process of reappraising these pasts. They launched a debate on developments in Central and Eastern European countries, current research tendencies, and the future direction of European cooperation in this area.
