Construction was commenced on 1 April 2003. The site is currently being terraced on several different levels on which the foundations for the stelae will be laid in the next stage of construction. At the same time, excavation and foundation work is under way in preparation for the Information Centre in the southeastern corner of the site.
The most spectacular stage of construction – the delivery and erection of the 2,700 stelae – will begin in late summer. The stelae will make heavy demands on both concrete as a material and its production technology. Working with the architect Peter Eisenman, the company entrusted with the commission has sought advice from renowned concrete experts in developing the plan for multiple production, which will begin in September 2003.
The company commissioned will present the outcome of this production process by means of ten sample stelae at the construction site on Saturday 16 August 2003. On this occasion, the architect Peter Eisenman will appraise the technical, constructional and artistic aspects of the stelae manufacture once again before multiple production is commenced.
