The mass grave in Khazhyn, located 7 km south of the city of Berdychiv, is one of several large mass graves located in and around Berdychiv.
This publication tells the story of the life and death of the Jewish community in the Ukrainian town of Berdychiv during the Holocaust. The town, located in the Zhytomyr region of Ukraine, is one of the sites of the international project “Protecting Memory”. In 2019, the project helped transform one of the sites where Jews were murdered, close to the village of Khazhyn near Berdychiv, into a dignified memorial and place of information. As part of the project, an exhibition dedicated to the history of Berdychiv’s Jewish community was opened in the centre of Berdychiv. The research for the exhibition is based on sources from Ukrainian and foreign archives, scientific literature and private collections.
Both the project and the historical research, which resulted in this publication, have been funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
